Tesla, Inc. is an American company that makes electric cars, batteries and solar products. It is based in Austin, Texas. Elon Musk is its chief executive. Tesla makes the second-generation Roadster.[1]

History

Tesla was founded on July 1, 2003, in San Carlos, California, as Tesla Motors. Its founders were Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk led the first funding round in 2004 and became chief executive in 2008. A 2009 legal settlement lets five people, including Musk, call themselves co-founders.[1]

The company's first car was the original Roadster (2008–2012). The company changed its name to Tesla, Inc. in February 2017. It moved its headquarters to Gigafactory Texas in Austin on December 1, 2021.[1]
